Roller and bush

The parts of the inner link. The bush is press-fitted into two inner plates and the roller turns freely on the bush; the roller is the part that meets the sprocket.

Inner link

Pin

The slim pin, pressed into the outer plate, passes through the bush and turns inside it. This contact determines the wear life of the chain.

Hardened steel

Plates

The outer plate sits on the pins and closes the link. The inner and outer plates carry the tensile load; pitch and number of strands are chosen here.
